ERP to Xero Migration
Leaving an ERP is not simply a software switch. The difficult part is deciding what financial history to retain, how to extract it, how it should translate into Xero and how the result will be reconciled.
Start with the accounting requirements, not a promise that Xero is “better”
ERP platforms exist for a reason and Xero is not the right destination for every organisation. The migration decision should be based on the business's future requirements, reporting, integrations, transaction volumes and controls. Our role begins once Xero has been selected and the historical-data workstream needs to be designed properly.
We deliberately avoid blanket claims about ERP cost savings or functionality. The important migration question is whether the agreed future Xero environment can support the business and what history needs to come with it.
The extraction route can determine the whole project
ERP and legacy platforms rarely export everything needed in one neat file. General ledger detail may sit separately from customers, suppliers, VAT, dimensions, allocations or attachments. Some systems are best extracted through reporting tools or supported interfaces rather than generic CSV exports.
We establish the extraction route early so the migration is scoped around data that can actually be obtained and reconciled.
Translate ERP structures into Xero deliberately
ERP dimensions, departments, cost centres, account codes and transaction types do not always have a one-to-one Xero equivalent. We map the accounting outcome first, then agree where Xero tracking, new account structures or other treatments are appropriate.
This is particularly important for groups, foreign currency and businesses using a legacy system that has accumulated years of custom structures.
Decide what happens to the legacy history
Opening balances can be enough for some businesses. Others need detailed history for reporting, audit support, statutory retention or day-to-day access. Retaining a legacy platform solely as a read-only archive can also have practical or cost implications, so it is worth comparing that option with migrating the appropriate history.
The answer should be decided before go-live, not after access to the old system has become difficult.

Can you migrate from an ERP to Xero?
Yes, where Xero has been selected as the appropriate destination and the required source data can be extracted. We scope the migration around the source system and required history.
Do we have to migrate all historical data?
No. The amount of history is a business and compliance decision. We can support opening-balance, multi-year and deeper historical approaches.
Can ERP dimensions become Xero tracking?
Often yes, but the mapping needs to be designed around Xero's structure and the business's reporting requirements.
Can you migrate attachments?
Where documents can be extracted and matched to transactions, attachment migration can be scoped separately.
Should the migration specialist also implement the ERP or Xero setup?
The workstreams can be separate. The destination adviser or implementation team owns the future-state configuration, while the migration specialist focuses on extraction, transformation, historical data and reconciliation. Close coordination between the teams is important.
